Harlan said when she originally co-founded Pets & People 25 years ago, it started out because the City of Yukon didn’t have any pet adoption policy in compliance with state law so they just didn’t do adoptions at the time. It led to Pets & People being started and it began by just buying stuff for the shelter after raising about $600.
Pets and People pet adoptions take place at the Yukon Animal Shelter at 701 Inla. Adoption hours are noon to 5:30 p.m. seven days per week. The shelter is two blocks north of Route 66 and one block west.

A Yukon woman who has waged a bitter battle against a pet adoption organization that runs a kennel on her property has been fined $1,000 by a judge and warned that she could be jailed for violations of a consent decree banning her from harassing personnel and trespassing at the facility. The board of the Pet Adoption League and Humane Association in Yukon and one of its founders are in a legal tug-of-war over the future of the nonprofit operation that seeks homes for abandoned dogs and cats. A Westmoreland County judge has given the Pet Adoption League and Humane Association in Yukon and its former kennel manager 30 days to file legal arguments over whether the ex-manager's actions violated a March 2014 consent decree that set guidelines for governing the interactions between the disputing parties. Pets and People Humane Society was created in 1990 as a therapy program where volunteers visited local nursing homes with their dogs to cheer up residents. In 1998, the operation expanded its focus to adoptions and opened its own shelter in a city building in Yukon.YUKON — A no-kill animal shelter that bills itself as a harbor for pets awaiting adoption is overcrowded, with some dogs and cats being kept in undersized cages for up to 23 hours a day, current and former workers say.Pets and People is now focused on the adoption of pets currently in their program. They are not rescuing from the city of Yukon. Unfortunately, the city shelter does not have its own adoption program because Pets and People has provided that service free of charge for 24 years.
