I loved the training and sales side of the job but as the store was not very busy they decided to save hours by using me as a . I didn't mind helping on cash but out of an 8 hour shift I was spending 5 hours as a cashier and 2-3 hours training. As cash can not be left unattended, we were losing a lot of potential training sales as I was often unable to take the time to go show customers the calendar or go through any details due to a line up. I would cal for somebody to cover cash but managers were often too busy sitting in the office chatting and wouldn't come. Even with this I would still destroy my targets for sales but in a store willing to actually run properly, I would have easily trebled that. Many trainers I spoke to were never actually shown the training aspect but were only shown cash duties so the area trainer could go sell lots of classes and would be left to figure out the training side of things themselves. I have seen them teaching various things like stamping on the leash, scruffing dogs down, physical etc. Petsmart need to separate the responsibilities and not use trainers as an easy way to hours by turning them into cashiers.
Why would any of you continue to work for Petsmart at all? Especially anyone being a CPDT-KA. Good lord, I can see using petsmart to get the hours needed to take the exam and all, but after getting the certification, get the heck out of there and get a REAL job. There are plenty of places, Much, much, more reputable and moral, and ethical than PetDumb. Surely if you are a CPDT, you know how the "Professionals" speak of petsmart? What kind of a hypocritical corporation preaches of teaching "positive" reinforcement, then has trainers praising "The Dog Whisperer" and Cesar Millan and all of his crap? The "Other" trainer I worked with boasted of having met the little turd on a few occasions, and has an 8"x10" framed color photo of himself and that idiot standing together. He is so dang proud of this. And when I have pointed out, and/or sent links to videos/articles showing clear evidence of this idiot, having absolutely NO behavior at all, and not even having graduated from high school, using very harmful, painful, often even torture techniques, and in one case, nearly killing one dog, on video, and veterinarians speaking on all the research which has proved these methods DO cause more behavior problems to occur rather than reduce them, he has gotten angry, and withdrawn, eventually ending up stabbing me right in the middle of the back. This guy is a joke. The whole store is a joke. The company is a joke. Oh, and the entire 'shock collar' thing? What the heck is that all about? Why even bother having dog training classes? Just open up the glass doors wide, and let them grab. They don't care who they sell those things to and they don't even know anything about how or why they DON'T work, or the dangerous effects they can have and potential for abuse. In the area I am from,I know there are tons of rednecks, trying to catch the dog, early friday morning,to get ready for a fun filled Saturday night on the porch with and buddies.

PetSmart has unveiled a new Dog Therapy Training Course. The dog therapy training service prepares pet owners and their dogs for Therapy Dog evaluation, which is conducted by third parties dedicated to registering therapy pets. Once officially registered, the therapy dog and pet owner can work together to give back to their community, delivering emotional support to those who need it at senior living facilities, hospitals, schools, libraries, funeral homes, community centers and other locations.“We are thrilled to be the first national pet retailer to offer this unique training program, and we look forward to the positive impact this new course will have on pet parents and their dogs, as well as in local communities across North America,” said Joanna Zucker, vice president of services for PetSmart. “We listened to our pet parents, who told us they wanted this new level of training. Our dog training services range from puppy training and beginner training to advanced and trick training. This new offering provides another way for pet parents to deepen their connection with their dog and a powerful way to give back.”
