Champion Pet Foods, which manufactures Orijen cat and dog food and ACANA dog food, benefited from top five rankings of those products in Clavis Insight’s analysis. The study measured the online store representation of pet foods on key performance indicators, as listed above, critical to performance.
This 2016 Petfood Industry Top Companies issue highlights the significant changes that have occurred in the global pet food market in recent years. Some of the typical leaders – including , ranked No. 1 with US$17.224 billion in revenue in 2015, and , ranked No. 2 with 2015 revenue of US$11.917 billion – maintained their positions on top of this competitive landscape. However, recent acquisitions in the pet food industry also mean that one familiar market player, Procter & Gamble (P&G), is no longer in the rankings while newly entered the Top Companies list for 2015 as a result of this P&G deal.

The Top Global Pet Food Companies issue profiles the leading 40 pet food companies in 2015. Companies are ranked by annual revenue (US$ millions). The magazine issue also includes commentary on shifts in company rankings and an interactive map of the top pet food company in each region of the globe.Because there are no current regulations for contaminants like these in pet foods at the federal level, we did not make a determination as to what levels would be dangerous in pets. But, to draw parallels, we compared our values to regulatory precedents like EPA safe drinking water limits, California Prop 65, and WHO pesticide rankings. The Purina food our cat owner uses was ranked "average," but some Purina products did get the lowest ranking with elevated levels of arsenic and mercury. The Nestle Purina PetCare Company told us it tests for toxins and said "we also test for well over 150 substances.....to ensure the quality and safety of our pet food."Critics of the rankings note that some rankings changed following their initial release. In response, the Clean Label Project explained that in its initial launch of the pet food study, it included a nutrition component in the ranking. However, they later removed the nutritional component to focus solely on contaminants. “For us at the Clean Label Project, it’s “first do no harm,” said Bowen. She explained that removing the nutritional component changed the ranking for some products.KPIX chose not to reference specific product rankings in our report. Instead, we focused on the raw data we were provided. None of the pet food manufacturers we contacted, including those referenced above, provided any internal data or independent third party testing that contradicted the lab’s findings.In 2016, news about pet food contamination, top dog and cat food companies and market trends topped the list of most popular stories published during the year by Petfood Industry. The rankings were determined by the number of page views recorded by Google Analytics.
