Before You Complain About Your Local Animal Shelter - Petfinder
Whether you’re looking to adopt or foster an animal, volunteer to help homeless pets in your community, or report animal cruelty or a lost or found animal, your best bet is reaching out to your local animal shelter. We’ve all seen the Sarah McLachlan commercials encouraging us to donate and save abused shelter animals. Those sad, big brown eyes reaching out from the television screen puts a choke hold on the hearts of even the most seasoned veterans. But before you break out your checkbook or load up your minivan with dog food and kitty litter to donate to your local shelter, it is important to find out what they really need. Find out who is responsible for investigating and enforcing the anti-cruelty codes in your town, county and/or state. These people typically work for your local humane organization, animal control agency, taxpayer-funded animal shelter or police precinct.Important Note: While The HSUS is not directly affiliated with local humane societies, animal shelters, or SPCAs (each is an independent entity, governed by their own board of directors or by local officials), we work diligently to provide information, training, and advice that helps local groups do their work as effectively and humanely as possible.Because your local animal shelter may have more specific needs, please pick up the phone and check with them first. Some animals shelters ask for canned pet food donations, kitty litter, and other essential items. However, unless they ask for specific types of products, it’s best to stick with the generic types of donations we listed here. When in doubt, gift cards and other monetary donations are always accepted — even preferred. Some animal shelters are wonderful places; others are hideous dumps. Their treatment of animals, purposes, and capacities vary greatly. They may be run by the government, local humane societies, or private individuals. Some are funded by donations alone, while others receive tax support. Sometimes tax money comes with a stipulation that some animals must be turned over to experimenters. Every effort should be made to eliminate this policy, which is known as “pound seizure.” (See the “Pound Seizure” factsheet for more information.)
