Andrew (2010)I breed healthy rats with great personalities to provide the best pets, including blues, rex, and Dumbos
Pets rats come in all colors, varieties, coat types, and sizes! There's a type of rat to fit nearly anyone's tastes; and they are all most definitely cute! There are hairless rats, dumbo eared rats, rex coated rats, tailless rats, and more. Some are more rare than others; with one example being tailless rats. As rats are bred, there are more types and color variations than before. This one to the left is rather stunning!
As a matter of fact, the dumbo gene is considered to be a defect or deformity. The first dumbo rats began showing up in the pet trade, and the scientific community was completely unaware of these adorable animals. After receiving word of them, they began studies and ultimately found that there were two genes that had a role in this mutation: Msx1 and Dlx1 genes. While the animals do not truly suffer from their differences in appearance, they do have other physical traits that differ from standard eared fancy rats.

Appearance / health: The Dumbo Fancy Rat can easily be recognized by its low-set, large, petal-shaped ears. The ears are slightly furled at the top, and stand out prominently from the head. They’re moderately sized, averaging from 9 – 11 inches in length including their tail. They have a long body with a thin, tapering tail and relatively short legs. Their head is wider than that of a , with a narrower lower jaw. Their snout is tapering with long, straight whiskers. They round prominent eyes.Behavior / temperament: Perhaps because the Dumbo line has been bred exclusively for the pet trade, this variety of rat has a reputation for being particularly laid-back and docile. Rats are an intelligent and social animal who, when socialized properly, are generally quite fond of human interaction. In fact, rats can bond quite closely with their human companions and will crave their time and attention. They love to be handled and petted and very rarely bite. They can learn their name and even a few tricks, and are known to play games like tug-o-war and hide-n-seek with their owners. Their highly social nature means rats should always be kept in groups – even the most dedicated human companion can’t substitute for the interactions rats have with each other. Unlike many other species of rodents, male mice can generally live together happily without aggression. These sedate little sweeties are newer to the fancy rat scene. Dumbo rats have been bred purely as fancy pet rats instead of as snake food. This means they typically receive a wealth of handling & cuddles at just the right time: between 3-6 weeks of age. Dumbos are bred specifically for their gentle temperament.Ear shape: The dumbo mutation produces a wide variety ofear shapes and sizes. Most desirable among pet rat breeders arelarge, round, low-set ears. But the dumbo mutation may also producecreased, bent, folded, wrinkled, curled, misshapen, narrow, pointed, oblong and tubular .Ears may be positioned higher or lower on the skull. Ears may also beasymmetrical.
