WEST RICHLAND, WA - More than 100 people packed into Enterprise Middle School Tuesday night to discuss potential plans for a new animal shelter in West Richland.
After a brief presentation, the crowd broke up into smaller groups to brainstorm ideas.
Many are concerned about where the shelter will be located, if it will be built in a commercial area, or possibly near a park. In terms of funding for the project, a loan from the state is a possibility, along with donations from the community.
Either way, the city needs to pick a site before they can figure out a budget.
"Much of this development is a determination of how we're going to actually pay for it. And site selection is important for us because the cost of the site is part of the construction and therefore we have to pay for that," explained West Richland Police Chief Brian McElroy.
West Richland's city council hopes to have a site selected by the end of July.
The complaint also names the cities of Pasco, Richland and Kennewick, as well as A2Z Animal Sheltering Services -- which contracts with the cities to operate the shelter -- and Washington State University's veterinary school.
