An animal health check zones has been placed at mile marker 106 in Key Largo to ensure that any pet traveling out of Monroe County doesn't have screwworms.1)Ifyou travel with your pets into the Keys, on your drive back north you will berequired to stop at the Animal Health Check Station at MM 106 oceanside. The Animal Check Station Staff will ask youabout your pet’s origin (where you have traveled from). If you have not enteredthe quarantine area south of MM 91 your vehicle will be released. If you have traveled south of MM 91, theywill ask you about any signs of screwworm in your pet. If there is no evidence of screwworm, you maybe given a Certificate of Inspection and your vehicle will be released. Thisprocess should take about 5 minutes. On Oct. 3rd, 2016 the USDA andthe Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services established anAnimal Health Check Zone and a quarantine area extending from the southernboundary of Key Largo (MM 91) south through Key West (MM 0). Many of you have seen this interdictionstation at MM 106 oceanside. 3)Forpets (non livestock) traveling out of the Animal Health Check Zone by boat orairplane a Health Certificate is recommended. There is no mandatory animal inspection.2)Alllivestock (horses, pigs, etc.) headingnorth out of the Keys should have an Official Certificate of Inspection andproof of treatment against screwworm within 72 hours prior to movement out ofthe zone. If no certificate was obtainedthe animals will be inspected and treated at the checkpoint. If any animals are suspected of beinginfected with screwworm, they will be quarantined back to their origin forfollow up and treatment. This should not affect too many of us at Ocean Reef.To obtain a kennel license, the owner must submit a to the Board of Animal Health along with a check for $15.00 to cover the annual license fee. The kennel must then be inspected by the Board of Animal Health to verify compliance with the requirements specified in Minnesota Statutes 347.31 to 347.40 and Minnesota rules 1721.0520.
